Dave's Journal, Feb2022
Thanks to Cousin Pete, I watched it last night.
Good storyline (monster sneaks aboard returning space ship), decent 1958 screenplay but (1) why the in-flight love triangle thing? and (2) exploding grenades and shooting a bazooka inside the spaceship??
It takes place in the distant future : 1973 !!
PS: I went over to Svengoolie's website. He's kind of a cool guy with interesting stuff to show off.
Well . . . . a very interesting & entertaining documentary on TUBI.TV (a ROKU streaming channel). Interesting because I was a young lad whilst rockabilly music was on the radio (along with DooWop, and the two were called "Rock & Roll").
These were the 1950s, and I was considering if I should be a Rebel Rocker or a world-wandering Existentialist (with a PhD from The Sorbonne in Paris) or a New York drug-smoking Beatnik or a Jazz gutarist or California surfer boy or a Brooklyn Pizza shop owner or a conformist, middle class Aerospace Engineer. (In terms of life stories I have to tell these days, I made a poor decision).
Interesting also because this new Rockabilly subculture has many more facets (branches) than 1950s reality. People have added their own "spin" on "Rockability" and it is not one wonderful, harmonious culture. But should it be ?? I don't know. I guess we can each pick which subculture of the new Rockabilly world we align with.
That's not bad.
But we can imagine being in nicer places at nicer moments:
Vintage Postcards
A surprisingly good (1934, Claudette Cobert) movie that I had not seen before.
Many excellent closeups (Hollywood was first experimenting with closeups).
To visit Deb's high school bestie, Heidi and her brother, Pete.
Weather was unseasonably nice !
Heidi's home was special built in 1990 in classic colonial American structure, materials and decor. Her dad's family goes back to 1600's in America and lots of family memorabilia fills the place.
So you think modern pop music singers are tone deaf? can't hit a note to save their souls? are popular because of their looks and the glamorous stage shows, not their music skills? .... you're right on all accounts!!!
Netflix has a series called "This is Pop" and one episode is devoted to a computer program called AutoTune. It takes your voice while you are singing and "corrects" it to perfect pitch in the key set by the music producer. It was actually written by a seismic geologist / engineer. This guy was not in the music business. Someone mentioned to him about bad singers, and he thought "Hey, I know how to manipulate sounds, reflections, frequencies and recordings, let me give it a shot". And the rest is history.
One music producer is quoted: "I don't have to find people who can sing any more, I just have to find people who look good."
There are lots of YouTube videos on the topic, but as typical they are flooded with the video owners' opinions, snarky quips and stupid comments and little time devoted to facts.
This video isn't too bad: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NNXg5dIVC1M
