Dave's Journal, Nov2022
Very artsy, very French vintage (1945) film about artsy French theater people. Events take place in 1830's Paris.
You kinda gotta go with the flow here, as peoples' actions and reactions seem very strange and often confusing. (Language is French with English subtitles.)
The feeling reminded me a lot of the 1938 Wizard of Oz (Judy Garland).
I had to read up (Wikipedia) to understand what the title infers, as it doesn't seem to fit the movie. Well "paradise" in the French theater refers to the second balcony of the theater where the common folk sit and stand. They are generally boisterous and make or break a play with their reactions. The actors often spontaneously play off the reactions from the balcony.
Generally a sad, even tragic, romance movie that does not have a "happy ending".
Finally ... finished emptying the attic of junk. Trash guy comes Tuesday to take it away.
Aside from that, not much happening here. Been watching 1940s film noir (Veronica Lake & Allan Ladd crime dramas).
(just in time - snow predicted tonight)
Young teacher leaves Paradise (Bhutan) to be a barroom singer.
A "small" movie, very nicely done.
I actually had to check where exactly is Bhutan ?
And, for your information (and mine): Butan really is the Happiest Country in the World !
Loretta was ~5, Mike was ~3 (Catherine was 3 years away). We lived in an apartment in Andover, and I was seriously into B&W film.
This is a true story, I give you my word.
I spent too too much of my life too involved in work and school. In my 20's and 30's this was an obsessive mindset. Aside from working too many hours, I worked on 2 MS engineering degrees after hours, and I lost total awareness of my personal life and the world around me.
At work one Monday morning, a co-worker said "I am so glad we have the holiday this week". I looked at her and, totally blank as to what she meant, I said "What holiday?". She stared at me to see if I was kidding (I was not). Still not believing what I asked her, she says "It's Thanksgiving this Thursday". . . . I had no idea.
(I remembered this just now, probably because it is the Monday before Thanksgiving 2022.)
Nice little Italian movie (read the subtitles) that I rediscovered. Lovely lady dumps a$$hole husband and starts a better life with new, exccentric friends.
I skipped meds and drank beer and wine. Not too too much, but enough to get triggered into an explosive political discussion at the end of the night. My throat hurts (next morning). Why do fall into these traps ?? I actually don't keep up with all the facts about this and that, so I should just turn my ears off and smile. It's all so pointless, and I think people getting Social Security (me) should not be allowed to vote - it's not our world any more. Let the young folks do what they want with it.
There are a few things that pay their keep over and over again. That old hammer you have been using for 30 years, that little DirtDevil vacuum cleaner .... and this electric wood splitter. Have it for about 20 years and put zero maintenance into it and it keeps on ticking and did the job again this week.
Just want to give it its 15 seconds of internet fame.
